SIHEUNG, SOUTH KOREA –  Siheung City in Gyeonggi Province is poised to become a leading hub for bio-innovation, following Seoul National University's (SNU) successful selection for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s (MOTIE) prestigious ‘2025 Advanced Industry Specialized Graduate School Support Project’ in the biotechnology sector. The announcement, made on April 3rd, marks a significant step towards realizing Siheung's ambition to cultivate a robust bio-industry ecosystem and nurture a new generation of highly skilled professionals.

The MOTIE initiative aims to foster master's and doctoral-level talent capable of driving innovation in key national advanced strategic industries. A central tenet of the program is the establishment of a robust framework linking academia and industry, ensuring that graduates possess the practical skills and knowledge demanded by the rapidly evolving biotechnology landscape.

As a recipient of this significant grant, SNU will receive ₩3 billion (approximately $2.2 million USD) annually for five years, totaling ₩15 billion (approximately $11 million USD). This substantial funding will be strategically deployed to enhance the bio-education infrastructure at SNU's Siheung campus, develop and implement industry-aligned curricula, and provide comprehensive career support services for graduating students. Furthermore, the partnership will actively promote collaborative research and development projects in the field of advanced biopharmaceuticals, thereby bolstering the competitiveness of South Korea's domestic bio-industry on a global scale.

Siheung City has been proactively laying the groundwork for its emergence as a bio-technology hub. In June 2024, the region was designated as the Gyeonggi Siheung Bio Special District for National Advanced Strategic Industries. Since then, the city has been diligently pursuing key initiatives to strengthen its bio-industrial base. These efforts are anchored by the presence of the Seoul National University Siheung Campus and the state-of-the-art Seoul National University Siheung Hospital. Strategic projects underway include the operation of a dedicated Pharmaceutical Bio Human Resource Development Center, the establishment of a specialized Gyeonggi-type science high school with a focus on biosciences, and targeted efforts to attract leading biopharmaceutical companies and cutting-edge research institutions to the area.

Building upon this foundation, SNU’s newly established Advanced Industry Bio Specialized Graduate School will serve as a pivotal engine for growth. The graduate program will actively collaborate with research institutions and burgeoning biotech startups within Siheung City, fostering an environment conducive to the development of groundbreaking technologies and the creation of high-value jobs. This synergistic relationship between academia and local industry is expected to accelerate the translation of research breakthroughs into tangible commercial applications.

Siheung City Mayor Lim Byeong-taek expressed his strong commitment to this strategic partnership, stating, "By joining forces with the esteemed Seoul National University, we are creating a world-class environment for bio-education and research. Through sustained investment and close collaboration, we are determined to propel Siheung City to the forefront as a recognized and dynamic bio-innovation hub, contributing significantly to the nation's advancements in this critical sector."

This collaboration between Siheung City and Seoul National University represents a significant investment in the future of South Korea's biotechnology industry. By strategically cultivating talent and fostering a vibrant ecosystem for innovation, Siheung is poised to become a key player in the global bio-economy.
