ALTO PARANÁ, PARAGUAY — For the first time in its history, Paraguay is poised to host the World Hot Air Balloon Championship, a monumental event poised to launch the nation onto the global stage as a premier tourist and cultural hub. The four-day festival, declared of national interest by the Chamber of Deputies, is a landmark occasion for the country, bringing together 30 pilots from 20 nations for a spectacular display of skill and artistry.

Set against the stunning backdrop of the artificial lake created by the Itaipú Dam, the Alto Paraná International Balloon Festival will unfold from August 28 to 31 in the cities of Yguazú and Minga Guazú. The location was specifically chosen for its ideal flight conditions, as noted by event coordinator and veteran pilot Steve Kim. "The location guarantees flights without interference over the majestic body of water born from the Itaipú dam," he stated.

Organized by the Latin America International Balloon Festival, the competition will feature balloons soaring up to 30 meters in height, creating a series of breathtaking visual spectacles. The event's significance extends far beyond the competition itself; it's a strategic move to establish Paraguay as a new and prominent destination on the international tourism circuit. According to organizers, the festival is projected to become an annual affair, solidifying the country's reputation for future generations.

Key supporters include the Alto Paraná Governorate, led by César Landy Torres, and the mayors of the host cities, Mauro Kawano of Yguazú and Diego Ríos of Minga Guazú. Both leaders have expressed their unwavering commitment to the event, with Ríos even affirming his desire for Minga Guazú to become a permanent host for future editions. "This event will be key to boosting our local economy and strengthening Paraguay's international image," Ríos said.

The National Tourism Secretariat (SENATUR), under the leadership of Minister Angie Duarte, is also playing a crucial role. Duarte highlighted that the festival will be more than just a competition; it will be a vibrant celebration of Paraguayan culture, featuring national shows and traditional dances. "We are very happy that Paraguay is part of the annual calendar of international festivals. We know that this type of event attracts an incredible number of people, which will significantly benefit the local and national economy," she noted.

In a show of international partnership, the festival has secured participation from Taiwanese companies, thanks to the efforts of Taiwan's consul in Paraguay, Irma Chen.
