The Daejeon Municipal Yeonjeong Traditional Music Center (Director Nam Il-woo) announced that it will host "Heungpan Show," a brand-new Joseon pop jukebox musical combining traditional Korean music and comedy, on Friday, October 30 at 7:30 PM at the center's large hall, Keunmadang.
This performance reimagines the familiar lyrics of pansori and folk songs to fit a modern theatrical flow, adding witty situational comedy and clever banter to lower the barrier to traditional music and offer a uniquely distinctive stage.
In particular, the show was ambitiously planned to break away from the somewhat static and heavy image of traditional Korean music, delivering a friendly and delightful charm to citizens while securing a new audience base.
To elevate the quality of the stage, a lineup of Korea's leading talented artists has joined forces. Comedian Park Sung-ho, widely known as the "Emperor of Laughter" marking his 25th debut anniversary, will lead the show with his signature wit and energy, spanning genres from MCing and comedy to singing and traditional music. He is joined by the traditional creative fusion music group "Geokkuro Project"—formed in 2017 under composer Chae Ji-hye under the slogan "seeking solutions for today by reflecting on the past"—alongside skilled vocalists, delivering a fantastic harmony where tradition and modernity blend seamlessly.
"Heungpan Show" guides audiences through four diverse and colorful themed segments:
-Opening: An energetic stage featuring cheerful renditions of "Janggi-taryeong" and "Baetnorae" that instantly lifts the atmosphere of the concert hall.
-In Search of Our Sound: Traditional melodies such as "Sarang-taryeong" and "Taepyeong-ga," which deliver deep resonance and rich unique sentiments, touch the audience's emotions.
-National Singing Festival: A refreshing segment for all ages featuring a medley of Jeju folk songs, "Beautiful Swiss Lady," "Geumdarae-kkung," and "Jang-taryeong" that adds excitement.
-New Chunhyangjeon: A musical-style stage that delightfully and freshly interprets the familiar story of The Tale of Chunhyang. Weaving together "Gne-twigi" (swinging), "Gyeongbokgung-taryeong," "Sarang-ga" (Love Song), and "Ganggangsullae" (circle dance), it creates a spectacular view where traditional depth and modern humor coexist.
Nam Il-woo, Director of the Daejeon Municipal Yeonjeong Traditional Music Center, stated, "We have prepared a performance that families can enjoy and relate to together, joyfully reconstructing the lyrics of pansori and folk songs to match contemporary situations and directing them with vivid situational comedy. We hope citizens will fully and comfortably enjoy the charm of traditional music through this stage filled with continuous laughter and emotion."
Tickets can be reserved via the Daejeon Municipal Yeonjeong Traditional Music Center website (www.daejeon.go.kr/kmusic). For more details regarding the performance, please contact the Daejeon Municipal Yeonjeong Traditional Music Center at ☎ 042-270-8500.
