Cheonan, South Korea – The Cheonan Agricultural Technology Center announced on February 10th that the first 4,400 seedlings of 'Sky Green Melon,' Cheonan's representative specialty crop, have been planted this year.

Lee Pil-yeong (74), a veteran farmer with 21 years of melon cultivation experience, started planting about 30 days earlier than usual to deliver delicious Cheonan Suseong melons to consumers more quickly.

Mr. Lee manages 50 greenhouses (3.3ha) and has begun cultivation with thorough management, including installing heating facilities in the greenhouses to prepare for abnormal low temperatures.

Mr. Lee plans to plant in five batches by March 15 and harvest melons for two months from May.

This year's 'Sky Green Melon' cultivation scale is 61ha by 135 farms, and consumers can enjoy high-sweetness Cheonan Suseong melons with a Brix level of 16 or higher from May.

An official from the Cheonan Agricultural Technology Center said, "Cheonan is conducting demonstration cultivation of various melon varieties and will produce high-quality melons by introducing new technologies. As melon demand increases, we will do our best to provide cultivation technology guidance so that consumers can enjoy new tastes and safe agricultural products."
