INCHEON — A small truck narrowly avoided a serious accident yesterday after a section of a sidewalk collapsed in Gyeyang-gu, Incheon, trapping its front wheel. The incident, which occurred around noon on August 25, resulted in no injuries, according to a report from the Incheon Fire Department.
The sinkhole, located in the Gyesan-dong area, measured approximately 1.5 meters wide and 1 meter deep. A 1-ton truck was passing over the sidewalk when the ground suddenly gave way, causing the front passenger-side wheel to drop into the hole.
Emergency responders, including local police and fire officials, quickly arrived at the scene to cordon off the area and ensure public safety. After the truck was safely removed, the site was handed over to the Gyeyang-gu district office for repair. An official from the district later confirmed that the cause of the sinkhole was a damaged sewer pipe located beneath the sidewalk.
Repairs to the damaged infrastructure were initiated immediately to prevent further collapse and restore the area to normal. The swift response from authorities and the timely repair work highlight the ongoing challenges of maintaining urban infrastructure. While this event ended without casualties, it serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of deteriorating underground utilities.
