The race to host the 2036 Summer Olympics is heating up in South Korea. Seoul and North Jeolla Province are fiercely competing to be the domestic candidate city, with the final decision just two weeks away. The Korea Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) will make its choice through an executive board meeting on the 17th and a general assembly on the 28th.
Seoul: Aiming to Recreate the Glory of 1988
Seoul emphasizes its successful experience hosting the 1988 Seoul Olympics and its well-established infrastructure. The city also highlights its high public support and the potential to utilize existing facilities, arguing that it meets the IOC's requirements.
North Jeolla Province: Proposing Balanced Development through Solidarity with Local Cities
North Jeolla Province is promoting a concept of contributing to balanced national development through solidarity with local cities. The province plans to distribute events across different cities, such as athletics in Daegu, archery in Gwangju, and tennis in Hongseong, South Chungcheong Province. This approach aims to reduce hosting costs and revitalize local economies.
KSOC's Choice?
The KSOC will select the domestic candidate city through a secret vote at the general assembly on the 28th. Seoul and North Jeolla Province will each have 45 minutes for presentations and 15 minutes for Q&A to showcase their strengths.
