Gyeongsangbuk-do held a commemorative event for the "100th Braille Day," marking the 100th anniversary of the proclamation of the Korean Braille, with 300 visually impaired individuals and volunteers in attendance.
Braille Day commemorates the day when Songam Park Du-seong created the Korean Braille system "Hunmaeng Jeongeum" and promulgated it on November 4, 1926.
The event took place on the 4th at Pohang Lamer Wedding Hall. Hosted by the Gyeongsangbuk-do Braille Library and organized in cooperation with the Gyeongsangbuk-do Federation of the Visually Impaired, the event proceeded with a pre-ceremony program, a commemorative ceremony, and an autumn cultural festival.
During the commemorative ceremony, commendations were awarded to individuals who contributed to the advancement of welfare for persons with disabilities. KEPCO KDN Daegu Branch received the Provincial Governor's Commendation.
At the autumn cultural festival, following a musical performance by cellist Kim Min-joo, 20 visually impaired contestants selected from 22 cities and counties across the province participated in a poetry recital contest. The contest was designed to encourage creative writing and reading habits among the visually impaired and expand their social participation.
The event concluded with a special musical performance by singer Lee Yong-bok, an awards ceremony for the poetry recital contest, and a lucky draw.
Kim Geun-woo, Director of the Welfare Division for Persons with Disabilities at Gyeongsangbuk-do, stated, "The greatest difficulties experienced by the visually impaired are not only inconvenience in mobility, but also the information gap caused by rapid environmental changes. As today is a very meaningful day marking the 100th anniversary of the proclamation of Korean Braille, I hope it serves as an opportunity to enhance information accessibility through Braille and lay the foundation for education, culture, and independence."
He added, "Gyeongsangbuk-do will continue to listen closely to the voices on the ground and implement meticulous policies to protect the rights and interests of the visually impaired and promote their welfare."
