Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia – An Indonesian detention facility in Denpasar, Bali, has become the scene of a grim incident following the death of an inmate accused of child molestation, who reportedly succumbed to a severe beating inflicted by fellow detainees. The deceased, identified as 34-year-old AI, was found unconscious in his cell on June 4, 2025, and later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident, with six fellow inmates now named as suspects in the alleged fatal assault. According to Senior Superintendent Ariasandy, Head of Public Relations for the Bali Regional Police, the six suspects are narcotics detainees who were awaiting trial and have been charged under the Criminal Code for group assault.
The incident reportedly occurred shortly after AI was placed in the detention cell. While the precise motive behind the attack remains officially unconfirmed by the police, sources close to the investigation and local media outlets such as Bali Express have suggested that animosity towards AI, stemming from the nature of the child molestation charges he faced, may have played a significant role. Rumors circulating within the detention center indicated that other inmates harbored strong resentment towards individuals accused of such crimes.
Upon discovering AI in an unconscious state, three police officers on duty were dispatched to his cell. He was immediately transported to Bhayangkara Police Hospital, where, despite medical efforts, he ultimately died from his injuries. The police are continuing their investigation not only into the assault but also into the circumstances surrounding AI's death, including the conduct of the officers on duty. The three police officers who discovered AI are reportedly under investigation for negligent homicide, examining whether proper protocols were followed and if any negligence contributed to the tragic outcome. All six identified suspects remain in custody as the probe continues.
This incident casts a spotlight on the challenges faced by correctional facilities in managing inmates accused of particularly heinous crimes, where they may be vulnerable to violence from other detainees. The ongoing investigation aims to shed full light on the sequence of events leading to AI's death and to ensure accountability for all involved parties.
