Korea Tourism Organization and Naver Pay Partner to Enhance Foreign Visitor Payment Convenience

SEOUL, South Korea – The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) and Naver Pay (Npay) have entered into a business agreement aimed at significantly improving the shopping and payment experience for foreign tourists visiting South Korea. The partnership, announced on December 1, focuses on expanding the Near Field Communication (NFC) payment infrastructure across the country, a move designed to boost visitor satisfaction and streamline transactions.

The initiative comes at a critical time as South Korea seeks to solidify its reputation as a prime global tourist destination. Recognizing that seamless payment is key to a comfortable travel experience, the KTO has joined forces with one of South Korea's leading fintech platforms, Naver Pay, to accelerate the adoption of convenient, non-contact payment methods.

Strategic Infrastructure Expansion 

Under the agreement, KTO and Npay will collaborate on several core areas:

Offline Terminal Deployment: Naver Pay will actively distribute its integrated offline payment terminals across key tourist areas. This deployment will standardize and simplify the process for merchants to accept various payment types.
Integrated Tourist Information: Critical tourist information will be linked with the Naver Map application. This integration will make it easier for foreign visitors to locate NFC payment-enabled merchants and access essential travel data.
Joint Promotion: The organizations will jointly promote the NFC payment service to affiliated merchants, encouraging widespread adoption, particularly in areas popular with international visitors.
A primary goal is the rapid expansion of non-contact payment acceptance. The partnership ensures that information regarding businesses that support this service will be readily available on Naver Map.

Bridging the Information Gap 

In addition to physical infrastructure, the agreement tackles the language barrier often encountered by tourists. A major feature of the collaboration involves enhancing the usability of local reviews:

Review Translation: Reviews left by domestic users will be translated into key languages, including English, Chinese, and Japanese. This provides foreign tourists with access to authentic, trustworthy local information—a crucial factor in shopping and dining decisions.
Yoo Han-soon, Team Manager of the Shopping and Accommodation Team at KTO, emphasized the organization's commitment to enhancing the visitor experience. "We are dedicated to improving payment convenience for inbound foreign visitors by expanding various payment infrastructures, including contactless payment systems (NFC) and prepaid cards, in addition to the existing mobile pay QR systems," Yoo stated. "This effort will significantly contribute to increasing overall satisfaction with their visit to Korea."

Proven Success and Future Outlook 

The synergy between KTO and Npay has already shown promising results. Ahead of the formal agreement, both organizations successfully piloted the deployment of Npay terminals in the Gyeongju and Gyeongsang regional areas in September, leveraging the preparations for the 2025 APEC Summit. This early initiative demonstrated the efficiency and practical utility of the Npay terminal system in a high-traffic regional setting, validating the current nationwide expansion strategy.

The partnership represents a significant step towards modernizing South Korea's tourism infrastructure. By making payments as simple as a tap of a device, the KTO and Naver Pay are ensuring that foreign tourists can focus less on transactional hurdles and more on enjoying the rich cultural and shopping experiences the country offers. This strategic investment in fintech integration is set to raise the bar for tourism quality and competitiveness in the international market.
