Approximately 500 members of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Autonomous Disaster Prevention Corps improved their first-aid skills—including CPR and the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)—to strengthen their capacity to respond at disaster sites.
The Gyeongsangbuk-do Autonomous Disaster Prevention Corps Federation (Chairman Lee Ha-sik) held the ‘Disaster Response and Prevention Capacity Building Workshop’ on the 5th at the Cheongsong County Culture and Arts Center, with around 500 members from 22 cities and counties in attendance.
The Autonomous Disaster Prevention Corps is a resident-led organization that carries out disaster prevention activities such as hazard monitoring in risk-prone areas, disaster recovery, and relief for displaced persons. A total of 6,863 members are active across 22 cities and counties in the province.
Due to climate change, unpredictable extreme disasters such as torrential rains and heatwaves are becoming more frequent. This training was organized to equip members with the on-site capabilities to address such disasters.
Members engaged in hands-on practice for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillator (AED) usage, and first aid for bleeding and trauma.
Participants also shared activity information among the autonomous disaster prevention corps of different cities and counties, and pledged to build a community safety net to reduce damage from heavy snow and cold waves.
The provincial government plans to strengthen disaster prevention activities across city and county autonomous disaster prevention corps centered around the Federation, and support education and training to enhance members' response capabilities.
Kim Sang-chul, Director-General of the Safety and Administration Bureau of Gyeongsangbuk-do, stated, "This year as well, the on-the-ground activities and prompt disaster response across the 22 cities and counties by the Autonomous Disaster Prevention Corps were a tremendous help in protecting the lives and property of provincial residents," adding, "We expect that today’s capacity-building workshop will take the disaster management capabilities of the Corps to the next level, and that they will continue to play a major role as local safety guardians in the future."
