ACCRA – The Ghana Football Association (GFA) officially announced on Tuesday the appointment of veteran tactician Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Black Stars, tasking him with leading the nation through the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
The decision comes just two weeks after the abrupt dismissal of Otto Addo, who was sacked following disappointing losses in March friendlies against Austria (1-5) and Germany (1-2).
While former South Korean national team boss Paulo Bento was heavily linked to the position, the GFA ultimately opted for the extensive experience of Queiroz. The Portuguese manager boasts a high-profile resume, including stints at Real Madrid and Manchester United (as assistant), as well as national team roles with Portugal, Iran, Colombia, Egypt, Qatar, and Oman.
Queiroz is a well-known figure in Asian football, particularly in South Korea, where he is remembered for the infamous "fist gesture" directed at the Korean bench during a 2014 World Cup qualifier in 2013.
"It is with a deep sense of gratitude, responsibility, and humility that I begin this new journey with the Black Stars," Queiroz said in an official statement. "Ghana is a nation defined by talent, pride, and the soul of football. We will strive to meet expectations through unity, discipline, and ambition."
Ghana has been placed in Group L for the 2026 World Cup, where they will face formidable opponents in England, Croatia, and Panama. Queiroz’s primary mission will be to stabilize the squad and navigate through one of the tournament's most competitive groups.
