WASHINGTON D.C. / DOHA — The White House on Tuesday expressed "regret" over an Israeli airstrike targeting Hamas leadership within Qatar's capital, Doha, but affirmed its support for Israel's broader objective of eliminating the militant group.

The strike, which Israel said was aimed at senior Hamas officials, was carried out on the sovereign territory of a key U.S. ally and mediator in the Gaza conflict.

During a press briefing, White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt stated that while the United States was aware of the strike, its target location was "deeply regrettable."

"The unilateral bombing of a close ally and sovereign nation like Qatar does not serve the goals of either Israel or the United States," Leavitt said. "However, the objective of removing Hamas, which has profited from the tragedy of the people of Gaza, is a worthy goal."

A Delicate Diplomatic Dance 

The incident highlights a growing tension between the U.S. and its allies in the Middle East. Qatar has been a pivotal partner in de-escalating the Gaza conflict, hosting the political leadership of Hamas for years and acting as the primary mediator for ceasefire and hostage negotiations. The country is also home to the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest U.S. military installation in the region.

According to Leavitt, President Donald Trump was notified of the impending strike and immediately ordered envoy Steve Witkoff to provide advance information to the Qatari government.

"President Trump views Qatar as a strong ally and friend," Leavitt said, adding that the president "feels deep regret about the location of the attack" and hopes for the immediate return of all hostages and a swift end to the conflict.

Following the strike, President Trump reportedly spoke with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Qatari Prime Minister. The White House stated that during their conversation, Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed his desire to achieve peace quickly.

Leavitt added that President Trump "believes this regrettable incident can aid the opportunity for peace." The president also emphasized to the Qatari Prime Minister that such an event would not happen again on Qatari soil.

Conflicting Views on Peace 

The strike has sparked a diplomatic dispute, with Israel and Qatar offering opposing views on its potential impact on peace efforts.

Prime Minister Netanyahu defended the action, saying the strike could "create an opportunity to end the war in Gaza."

However, Qatar has vehemently condemned the attack, stating it undermines the very peace negotiations the country has been working to broker. The move could jeopardize the delicate diplomatic channels that have so far been instrumental in facilitating truces and hostage releases.

Analysts believe the strike could complicate future ceasefire talks, making it more challenging for Qatar to maintain its neutrality and trust with both sides.
