Daejeon, South Korea, is taking significant steps to promote itself as a leading tourism hub, starting with the expansion and relocation of the Daechongho Obaengni-gil Trail Exploration Center. This initiative aims to revitalize the area as an ecological tourism hub and a shared space for both local residents and visitors.

The city held a grand opening ceremony on April 23rd in Chudo-dong, Dong-gu, to celebrate the center's expansion. The event was attended by Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo, Dong-gu Mayor Park Hee-jo, and approximately 100 other attendees. The ceremony included an unveiling, commemorative photos, and a tour of the facilities.

The Daechongho Obaengni-gil Trail Exploration Center serves as a crucial base for guiding visitors and managing the Daechongho Obaengni-gil Trail, a renowned ecological tourism destination within the city. Attracting approximately 1 million visitors annually, the trail has become a landmark attraction in Daejeon.

The original center, established in May 2015 in a former public health center in Chudo-dong, Dong-gu, faced limitations due to its small size and poor accessibility, hindering the operation of diverse programs. In response, the city invested 913 million KRW to construct a new two-story building with a total floor area of 183.62 square meters.

The newly built Exploration Center boasts various functional spaces, including consultation rooms, reading rooms, offices, and multipurpose rooms. It has also received preliminary certification for a "barrier-free living environment," ensuring convenient access for everyone.

Daecheong Lake, created in 1980 with the construction of the Daechong Dam, not only provides essential water resources to Daejeon and Cheongju but also offers a scenic driving route along its perimeter. The lake's shoreline stretches 196 km, with a significant portion forming the Daechongho Obaengni-gil Trail. This trail connects villages and rivers, showcasing the natural beauty of the region.

Mayor Lee Jang-woo stated, "We will organically link the Daechongho Obaengni-gil Trail and nearby tourist resources, and develop the Daechongho Obaengni-gil into a leading ecological tourism destination in Korea through various policies such as ecological tourism programs, walking competitions, and trail maintenance."

The Daechongho Obaengni-gil Trail offers a variety of courses, each with unique themes and attractions. Course 4, for example, is known for its romantic lakeside scenery. The trail allows visitors to immerse themselves in the natural environment, observe migratory birds, and enjoy the tranquility of the lake.

Daejeon's commitment to developing the Daechongho Obaengni-gil Trail and its surrounding areas signifies a strategic move to attract more tourists and enhance the city's reputation as a premier destination. The expanded Exploration Center will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in achieving this goal, providing enhanced services and facilities for all visitors.
