Seoul, South Korea - In commemoration of its 20th anniversary, the Cheonggyecheon Stream is set to be revitalized through innovative public art installations. The Seoul Metropolitan Government has announced the "Creative Cheonggye" public art competition, inviting emerging artists and multidisciplinary teams to submit groundbreaking proposals that will inject vibrancy and offer novel experiences to the stream's visitors.
The competition seeks challenging and experimental artworks across all genres, aiming to transform the Cheonggyecheon into a dynamic cultural space. Eligible participants include South Korean artists, architects, landscape architects, and designers who are either currently active or planning to be in their respective fields. Individual artists must have held at least one solo exhibition, while teams must include at least one member who has participated in more than three group exhibitions. Notably, the competition also welcomes those newly venturing into the realm of public art, encouraging fresh perspectives and unconventional ideas.
To foster interdisciplinary collaboration, teams may include experts from diverse fields such as science, dance, theater, music, and traditional arts, including planners, directors, and researchers. This inclusive approach aims to generate public art that transcends traditional boundaries and engages a wider audience.
The submission period for the competition will run from May 15th (Thursday) to May 23rd (Friday), 2025, until 24:00 KST. Interested participants must register and submit their proposals through the official competition website (seoulart2025.com). The deadline for proposal submission is strictly enforced.
A total prize money of 3,000,000 KRW will be awarded to the selected artist(s) or team. Furthermore, each winning entry will receive substantial support for the realization of their artistic vision, with a grant of up to 27,000,000 KRW allocated for the production and installation of the artwork along the Cheonggyecheon Stream. This significant financial backing underscores the city's commitment to fostering high-quality public art that will enhance the urban landscape and enrich the lives of its citizens.
