Song Il-gu's Farm in Daebyeol-dong, Dong-gu, Cultivates Premium Grapes in 2,000㎡ Triple Greenhouses

Daejeon, South Korea  – Song Il-gu (43), a dedicated farmer in Daebyeol-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon Metropolitan City, is set to mark a significant achievement for the region's agricultural sector by shipping the nation's first harvest of seedless 'Delaware' grapes on April 15th.

Mr. Song, a second-generation grape farmer who inherited his expertise from his father's 40 years of viticulture experience, has meticulously cultivated these early-season grapes in four state-of-the-art triple-layered vinyl greenhouses spanning 2,000 square meters. Employing a heating cultivation method since December 2024, he has maintained optimal temperature and humidity levels, ensuring the premium quality and early maturity of his Delaware grapes.

This initial shipment of Delaware grapes boasts a significant advantage over conventionally grown, open-field grapes, reaching the market a remarkable three to four months ahead of the typical season. The harvest will be distributed and sold through the Sancheong Agricultural Cooperative's organized system, reaching consumers nationwide via major retail chains including department stores, Homeplus, Lotte Mart, and Hanaro Mart.

Notably, these early Delaware grapes exhibit an exceptional average sugar content ranging from 17 to 20 Brix. This sweetness level surpasses that of typical grapes, which generally measure between 14 and 15 Brix, positioning them as a highly palatable and enjoyable fruit for consumers of all ages.

The superior quality and early availability of these seedless Delaware grapes have already generated considerable consumer interest. Their unique appeal and high sugar content have proven particularly attractive in major metropolitan areas like Seoul, resulting in a surge of pre-orders and underscoring their strong market competitiveness.

The Daejeon Agricultural Technology Center has played a crucial role in supporting Mr. Song's endeavor, providing consistent and practical agricultural technology guidance. Their support encompasses various critical aspects of high-quality grape production, including heated cultivation techniques, effective pest and disease control strategies, optimized drainage and fertilization management, and preventative measures against winter damage. Furthermore, the center has conducted regular inspections of the grapes' growth and overall health, ensuring a successful and high-yield harvest.
