Gyeongsangbuk-do Declares Vision to Become Global Epicenter for Future Advanced Material, "K-Graphene"

Official Launch of the "K-Graphene Consortium"... Securing Leadership in Advanced Materials through Industry-Academia-Research-Government Alliance


On September 14, Gyeongsangbuk-do held the "K-Graphene Commercialization Consortium Launch Ceremony" at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory / Nano Convergence Technology Institute, officially initiating collaborative efforts among industry, academia, research institutions, and government bodies to drive product realization and commercialization of graphene technologies.

The event drew around 100 participants, including Ji Kwang-chul, Head of the Ultra-Innovation Economy Promotion Task Force at the Ministry of Economy and Finance; Lee Jae-hyung, Acting Director of the Textile, Carbon & Nano Division at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy; Yang Geum-hee, Vice Governor for Economic Affairs of Gyeongsangbuk-do; Park Yong-sun, Mayor of Pohang; Lee Byung-hoon, President of the Nano Convergence Technology Institute at POSTECH; alongside domestic graphene company executives and related institutional representatives. 

Referred to as the "dream material," graphene boasts extraordinary electrical and thermal properties, making it highly versatile across multiple sectors such as semiconductors, heat-dissipating components, and transparent electrodes. However, transitioning laboratory research achievements into commercial products and mass manufacturing has historically required robust infrastructure dedicated to process verification, testing, and certification. The newly launched consortium aims to bridge this gap by aligning technical expertise and resources across sectors, supporting corporate product development and full-scale business execution. 

During the launch ceremony, organizers introduced the "K-Graphene Foundry (Contract Manufacturing Facility)," a joint initiative spearheaded by Gyeongsangbuk-do, Pohang City, and the POSTECH Nano Convergence Technology Institute. This facility provides dedicated incubation spaces for graphene research institutions and companies within the Nano Convergence Technology Institute. By leveraging the institute's advanced equipment and infrastructure, it offers comprehensive support for prototype manufacturing, process demonstration, and testing-certification services—effectively resolving the challenges smaller businesses face in securing independent mass-production and testing environments. 

This momentum builds upon Gyeongsangbuk-do's selection in June for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's industrial innovation infrastructure establishment project, specifically focusing on building a "Demonstration Foundation for AI-Based Materials and Parts Using Graphene 2D Nanomaterials". Backed by an investment of 14.7 billion won from 2026 through 2030, the province will establish large-scale graphene manufacturing and analytical equipment at the Nano Convergence Technology Institute, while supporting artificial intelligence-driven production processes and applied component technology developments. 

Vice Governor Yang Geum-hee remarked, "Pohang has long stood as the backbone of South Korea's traditional manufacturing industry and has transformed into a global hub for advanced materials anchored by secondary battery special zones. By combining this robust industrial foundation with the 'dream material' graphene, Gyeongsangbuk-do will evolve into a pivotal international axis leading the world's advanced materials industry". She added, "We will provide unsparing support to ensure enterprises can expand their capabilities in the most business-friendly environment possible".

Moving forward, Gyeongsangbuk-do plans to consolidate Pohang's research competencies and high-tech infrastructure through the consortium, systematically fostering a complete industrial ecosystem that links graphene material and component verification directly to commercialization and market distribution.

Graphene, first isolated successfully in 2004, is structurally structured as a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. It is recognized for being more than 200 times stronger than steel while exhibiting electron mobility significantly superior to copper. Despite South Korea’s world-class research capabilities in synthesis and characterization, bridging the "valley of death" between laboratory scale and commercial mass production has remained a primary hurdle. By establishing a public foundry and public testing infrastructure system locally, Gyeongsangbuk-do aims to position South Korea at the forefront of global standard-setting and commercial deployment for 2D nanomaterials.
