San Francisco, CA – In a significant move signaling a strategic diversification away from its foundational partnership with OpenAI, Microsoft (MS) announced a massive investment in and expanded partnership with Anthropic, a leading AI competitor. The announcement, made at MS’s annual flagship event, "Ignite 2025," underscores the company’s push to fortify its AI platform, reduce its dependence on any single partner, and accelerate the integration of cutting-edge AI across its product ecosystem.

The partnership was unveiled on November 18 (local time) at the Ignite 2025 event in San Francisco. Asha Sharma, Corporate Vice President of Core AI at Microsoft, introduced the collaboration by stating, "Anthropic now runs in Microsoft's Foundry," before welcoming Mike Krieger, Anthropic’s Chief Product Officer (CPO), to the stage. Krieger expressed optimism, saying, "From the beginning, there was a sense that the two companies shared DNA and trust. We look forward to what happens when we combine our trustworthy models with the Microsoft platform." A backdrop featuring the two companies' logos joined by a heart visually emphasized the tight-knit cooperation.

The core of the multi-billion-dollar deal involves Microsoft and Nvidia making substantial investments in Anthropic. Specifically, MS committed $5 billion (approximately 7.3 trillion KRW), while Nvidia pledged $10 billion (approximately 14.6 trillion KRW). In return, Anthropic will purchase an estimated $30 billion (about 44 trillion KRW) worth of services from the Microsoft Azure cloud platform, establishing a deep technical integration between the companies.

Building a Diverse AI Ecosystem

Microsoft's strategic aim is to turn its large-scale AI development and deployment platform, Foundry, into a comprehensive hub. The partnership will integrate Anthropic's models—including Sonnet 4.5, Opus 4.1, and Haiku 4.5—into Foundry, which already supports models from OpenAI (like ChatGPT), Mistral, and Llama. This consolidation creates a powerful, multi-model AI environment, insulating Microsoft from potential reliance issues.

Analysts view this as a clear effort by Microsoft to distance itself further from its primary AI partner, OpenAI. This follows an earlier move in September when Microsoft integrated Anthropic’s AI into its Copilot 365 chatbot for Microsoft Office. As the intellectual property rights MS holds from its initial investment in OpenAI are set to expire in 2032, this diversification is a proactive measure. Gil Luria, an analyst at DA Davidson, commented that the partnership's major takeaway is that the "AI economy has reduced its reliance on OpenAI."

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella addressed the collaboration in a separate video message, affirming that while "all of this is built upon our partnership with OpenAI, who is an important partner to Microsoft," the new arrangement means "we will use Anthropic models, and they will use our infrastructure."

Leadership and New Product Rollouts

The Ignite keynote speech was delivered by Judson Althoff, Commercial CEO, rather than Nadella, who had recently announced Althoff's promotion. Nadella stated that the leadership change would allow him to "focus more on core technical areas, including data center expansion, AI, and product innovation."

Beyond the Anthropic deal, Microsoft also unveiled several new AI-driven capabilities at the event. These included 'Agent 365,' a platform designed for managing AI agents, and 'Work IQ,' an advanced AI function capable of analyzing user behavior beyond simple command execution. The announcements collectively paint a picture of Microsoft aggressively moving to lead the next phase of the enterprise AI revolution by securing multiple, robust AI pipelines.
