On August 9th and 10th, the Boryeong Mud Festival, Korea's representative summer festival, was filled with the heat of music. The "ON:CHUNGNAM" inter-regional music creation exchange performance, organized by the Chungnam Content Agency, brilliantly decorated the festival's finale at the Boryeong Mud Square Open Square. This performance is being hailed as a significant event that went beyond a simple festival side-event to prove the potential of local music content.
"ON:CHUNGNAM" was planned to provide an opportunity for music creators from across the country to interact and grow, centered around the Chungnam Music Creation Studio. Twelve teams of musicians belonging to music creation studios in five regions—Chungnam, Daejeon, Ulsan, Sejong, and Chungju—took the stage to showcase their unique music. A continuous stream of various genres, including rock, hip-hop, and ballads, drew an enthusiastic response from both domestic and international visitors. In particular, the linkage of this performance with the global Boryeong Mud Festival served as an effective opportunity to promote Chungnam's local music to the public.
Kim Gok-mi, Director of the Chungnam Content Agency, stated, "Showcasing a collaborative performance among local music creation studios on an international stage like the Boryeong Mud Festival is a meaningful attempt." She added, "We will continue to expand opportunities for locally-based musicians to grow through sustained interaction." Ahead of the "2025 Chungnam Visit Year," this performance further amplified its significance as a symbolic event showing the potential for merging local culture and tourism.
"ON:CHUNGNAM" was an experimental attempt to illuminate the outstanding capabilities and potential of local musicians and to explore new avenues for local creative music through direct communication with the public. By demonstrating how a local festival can serve as a hub for cultural content rather than just an event, this performance has pointed the way forward for the Chungnam regional culture content industry. All eyes are now on whether the wave of music that started at the Boryeong Mud Festival can spread beyond Chungnam and across the nation.
