SEOUL — South Korean universities have significantly boosted their global standing, with a record four institutions securing spots in the top 100 of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026. The latest results, announced on October 9 (local time) by the UK-based global higher education data specialist, mark a new high for the country's academic competitiveness.

Yonsei University and Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) made significant leaps to join long-standing leaders Seoul National University (SNU) and KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) within the coveted top 100 tier. This unprecedented achievement highlights the accelerating shift of academic excellence toward East Asia.

Key Rankings and Institutional Performance

 

Research Investment Driving Success 

The rise of these institutions is attributed to strategic, targeted investment, especially in research quality and industry engagement. The THE rankings evaluate universities across five core pillars: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook, and Industry Income. South Korea's average score reportedly increased by 1.04 points, driven by improvements in all four research quality metrics and teaching reputation.

Yonsei University's notable ascent is linked to its focus on "trans-disciplinary convergence research" aimed at solving complex global challenges. A university official commented, "Our strategy of focusing on the qualitative excellence of research is yielding world-class results. We will continue to strengthen our foundation for fusion research and international collaboration."

Sungkyunkwan University earned high marks in the Industry Income category, where it was ranked joint 64th globally, acknowledging its strong corporate links and practical research capabilities.

Korea University's Vision for Growth 

Korea University made the most dramatic improvement, jumping 33 places to joint 156th. Its ambitious 'Vision 2040'—aimed at becoming a 'Next Intelligence-Global Research-Oriented University'—involves strategic investment in high-demand fields such as AI, Bio-Tech, next-generation semiconductors, batteries, and quantum computing. A key initiative is the Endowed Professorship System, a new concept in industry-academia cooperation that recruits field-experienced faculty through corporate sponsorships.

Broader Gains and Lingering Challenges 

Beyond the top ranks, other Korean universities also demonstrated strength. POSTECH rose 10 places to joint 141st. Ajou University entered the top 500, while Yeungnam University and Gachon University secured spots in the top 600. Ajou University officials noted continued support for AI, bio, semiconductors, and future mobility following recent scientific publication achievements and AI research partnerships with global tech firms.

Despite these significant national gains, a challenge remains: South Korea failed to place any university within the 'Asia TOP 10' for the second year. Mainland China dominated the regional elite with five institutions, followed by Singapore (2), Hong Kong (2), and Japan (1).

Phil Baty, THE's Global Affairs Officer, acknowledged South Korea's progress, stating, "Overall, the average score for South Korean universities improved... This year's ranking strongly shows and accelerates the trend where the power balance in research and higher education excellence is rapidly moving from long-standing Western institutions to the rising stars of the East."

The total number of Korean universities ranked in the top 1,500 reached 39, reflecting a general upward trend in the country's higher education sector on the global stage.
