Pyeongchang, South Korea – Pyeongchang County has secured the rights to host the 2025 World Association of the Olympic Cities (WAOC) General Assembly, the county announced on Tuesday.
The decision was made at the WAOC Executive Committee meeting held in Lausanne, Switzerland on Monday. Pyeongchang submitted its bid to host the assembly in July.
The 2025 WAOC General Assembly will be held in Pyeongchang and Seoul from October 26th to 31st, 2025. The event will bring together Olympic city representatives and sports experts from around the world to discuss sustainable sports policies and international cooperation.
The main venue for the assembly will be the Pyeongchang Olympic Theme Park, which is scheduled to open in July 2025. Participants will also have the opportunity to tour other Olympic legacy facilities in Pyeongchang, such as the Olympic Memorial Hall, the Ski Jumping Center, the Sliding Center, and Woljeongsa Temple.
Founded in Lausanne in 2002, the WAOC is an international association recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). With a membership of 50 cities across 25 countries and five continents, the WAOC aims to promote sustainable urban development through research and collaboration on sports, culture, education, and economic impact.
"Hosting the 2025 WAOC General Assembly is a significant opportunity for Pyeongchang to once again take center stage in the international sports world," said Pyeongchang County Mayor Shim Jae-guk. "We are committed to working with Olympic cities from around the world to build a sustainable future."
The successful bid reflects Pyeongchang's enduring legacy as a host of the Olympic Winter Games and its continued commitment to promoting sports and international cooperation.
