BERLIN — Germany, Europe’s leading provider of military support to Ukraine, is set to substantially increase its financial and military assistance to Kyiv, with plans to add an extra €3 billion (approximately $3.2 billion) to the 2026 budget. This decisive move underscores Berlin's sustained commitment to bolstering Ukraine's defense capabilities against Russia's ongoing aggression.

The planned increase will bring Germany’s total allocated aid for Ukraine in the 2026 budget to roughly €11.5 billion, up from the initially earmarked €8.5 billion. According to sources within the German Finance Ministry, the additional funds are designated for critical military hardware, including artillery, drones, armored vehicles, and, notably, the cost of replacing two Patriot air defense systems recently supplied to Ukraine.

Since the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022, Germany has provided approximately €40 billion in aid to Ukraine, making it a pivotal partner in Kyiv's defense efforts.

Unwavering Support Amid Budget Adjustments 

The proposal for the additional €3 billion is expected to be finalized during the year-end budget adjustment process by the Finance and Defense Ministers. A Finance Ministry spokesperson confirmed the government’s resolve: "We will continue our support for as long as necessary to defend against Russia's war of aggression." This sentiment was reportedly backed by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, signaling strong political consensus behind the move.

The augmentation of the aid package is seen by observers as a clear affirmation of Germany's determination to consistently expand its support, cementing its role as the most significant European military donor.

Patriot Systems Deployed on the Front Lines 

Parallel to the financial announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the nation has received two Patriot air defense systems from Germany, which are now being deployed for operational use. Speaking in a video address on European enlargement policy, President Zelensky expressed gratitude to Germany for fulfilling the agreement to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.

The delivery of these highly effective systems was initially announced by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius in late September. The Patriot systems are crucial for Ukraine, providing a sophisticated layer of defense against Russia's regular missile and drone attacks, which often target critical infrastructure.
