The 'Ambassador's Cup Taekwondo Championship', the first since the establishment of the South Korean Embassy in Vilnius, the capital of the Baltic Sea nation of Lithuania, successfully opened. The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Lithuania announced this news on the 1st (local time), evaluating that the event went beyond a simple sports gathering and became an important opportunity to promote cultural exchange between South Korea, Lithuania, and neighboring countries.

300 Athletes from Eastern Europe United by Taekwondo 

The competition, held in Vilnius on the 27th of last month, was energized by the participation of around 300 athletes and coaches not only from Lithuania but also from neighboring countries like Poland, Latvia, Estonia, and Ukraine. This demonstrates the growth of the Taekwondo community in Lithuania and proves that Taekwondo has established itself as a popular sport among the Baltic Sea countries. In Lithuania, with a population of about 2.8 million, approximately 1,000 practitioners are currently actively involved in 8 dojangs (Taekwondo training halls) affiliated with the local Taekwondo federation. The high level of interest was reflected by the live broadcast of the event on the local internet media outlet, Delfi TV.

Ambassador Jeon Joyoung emphasized that the participating athletes are acting like 'cultural ambassadors' who share the spirit and values of Taekwondo, thus promoting cultural exchange between the two countries, and stressed the significant contribution of Taekwondo to enhancing bilateral friendship.

Active Participation from the Korean Community, A Celebration of Korean Culture Unfolds 

Meanwhile, the Korean Residents Association, consisting of about 40 permanent residents, actively supported the successful hosting of the tournament. The Association operated experience booths for the athletes and citizens who visited the arena, showcasing traditional Korean culture such as Hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) exhibitions, Jaegichagi (Korean hacky sack), and Yutnori (a traditional board game). Furthermore, they shared the taste and warmth of Korea by serving thoughtful Korean dishes like Japchae (glass noodles with vegetables), Gimbap (seaweed rice rolls), and Jeyuk-bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork). Beyond sports exchange, they played a significant role in grassroots diplomacy by introducing Korea's tradition and food culture to the local community.

The resident South Korean Embassy in Lithuania opened in October last year. Before that, the Embassy in Poland had handled diplomatic and consular affairs, but the establishment of a resident embassy became the basis for upgrading relations and expanding exchange between the two countries. As part of the opening commemorative events, the Embassy also hosted a K-Classic Concert on the 24th of last month at the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society Concert Hall, featuring talented Korean musicians including soprano Han Kyung-sung and prodigy violinist Kim Dam-hyun. This demonstrates a variety of cultural diplomacy activities beyond the Taekwondo championship, enhancing Korea's image.

This Ambassador's Cup Taekwondo Championship, held just before the one-year anniversary of the resident embassy's opening, is a symbolic event and is expected to serve as an important stepping stone that deeply imprints the values of Taekwondo and the culture of Korea upon Lithuania and its neighboring countries. South Korea and Lithuania are projected to build a deeper friendly relationship through sports and culture.
