South Korean national football team forward Hwang Hee-chan has left Wolverhampton Wanderers of the English Championship (second tier) to join German Bundesliga side FC Schalke 04 on loan.
Schalke announced via their official website on the 2nd (Korean time) that they have secured Hwang from Wolverhampton on a one-season loan running until June 30, 2027. Facing an uncertain future at Wolverhampton, Hwang completed the dramatic deadline-day move just hours before the transfer window closed at 7:00 AM on the 2nd.
This move marks Hwang's return to German football after five years, having previously played for RB Leipzig until 2021 before moving to Wolverhampton.
According to local media, the loan agreement includes a purchase option allowing Schalke to make the transfer permanent for a fee of 3 million euros (approx. 4.78 billion KRW) at the end of the season.
Wolverhampton had been pushing for Hwang’s transfer following their relegation to the EFL Championship after finishing bottom of the Premier League (EPL) last season. While multiple EPL and Championship clubs were linked, Hwang ultimately chose Schalke.
Schalke, which competed in the German 2. Bundesliga from 2023 to 2026, earned promotion back to the Bundesliga after winning the 2. Bundesliga title last season. They have finished as Bundesliga runners-up seven times in their history without winning the title.
In his remarks, Hwang shared his enthusiasm: "I watched Schalke's matches last season and felt this team would be a great fit for me. I visited Schalke's home stadium back in 2021 when I was playing for Leipzig, but it was played behind closed doors due to COVID-19. Now, I am eagerly looking forward to playing in front of a packed crowd as a Schalke player."
Hwang’s debut for Schalke is expected to take place during the 2026–2027 Bundesliga Matchday 2 home fixture against Bayern Munich at the Veltins-Arena (Arena AufSchalke) on the 6th at 1:30 AM. A highly anticipated "Korean derby" showdown with fellow South Korean national team defender Kim Min-jae is likely.
