Chungnam Province, South Korea – As the vibrant festival season approaches, Chungcheongnam-do Province (Chungnam) is diligently laying the groundwork to welcome an anticipated surge of visitors during its designated "2025-2026 Visit Chungnam Year." Provincial authorities recently convened key stakeholders from municipal governments, public organizations, and the tourism sector to synchronize efforts and address crucial aspects ranging from infrastructure readiness to ensuring a positive visitor experience.
In a proactive move, the province hosted the "2nd Provincial-Municipal Tourism Officials Meeting for 2025" and the "1st Public-Private Tourism Council Meeting for the Visit Chungnam Year 2025" on April 29th at the provincial government headquarters. These consecutive meetings underscored the commitment of Chungnam to achieving its ambitious goal of attracting 50 million visitors by 2026 and fostering a sustainable tourism ecosystem that benefits the local economy.
The first meeting brought together approximately 20 tourism directors from across Chungnam's cities and counties. Discussions centered on the multifaceted preparations for the Visit Chungnam Year, encompassing strategies to cultivate a celebratory atmosphere, develop integrated programs leveraging the region's diverse local resources, expand and enhance tourism infrastructure, establish a welcoming and efficient tourism environment, and implement effective promotion and marketing campaigns.
A key concern highlighted during the meeting was the issue of fair pricing, particularly during the peak festival season. Provincial authorities announced plans for joint crackdowns with city and county officials to combat price gouging at festival venues and popular tourist destinations. Furthermore, a strong emphasis was placed on maintaining high standards of hygiene across all tourism-related facilities to ensure the health and safety of visitors.
To amplify the celebratory spirit of the Visit Chungnam Year, the province has urged each city and county to proactively declare its own "Visit [City/County] Year" in conjunction with prominent local festivals. This synergistic approach aims to create a province-wide wave of welcoming initiatives and enhance the overall visitor experience.
The subsequent "1st Public-Private Tourism Council Meeting for the Visit Chungnam Year" facilitated a crucial dialogue between government bodies and the private sector. Approximately 20 representatives from public institutions, including the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) Daejeon Chungnam Branch, the Chungnam Culture & Tourism Foundation, and the Chungnam Institute, joined forces with leaders from eight prominent tourism-related organizations. These included the Chungnam Tourism Association, the Korea Foodservice Industry Association Chungnam Branch, the Korea Accommodation Association Chungnam Branch, and various industry experts.
The meeting served as a platform to share updates on the progress of the Visit Chungnam Year and to collaboratively brainstorm strategies for attracting a greater influx of tourists. The Public-Private Tourism Council, established the previous year, plays a vital role in fostering a robust cooperative framework aimed at revitalizing the tourism industry and bolstering its overall capabilities. The council convenes bi-annually to engage in substantive discussions encompassing the identification of compelling tourism content and the generation of innovative ideas.
A significant focus of the recent meeting was on adopting a visitor-centric approach to tourism policy. Deliberations specifically addressed measures to enhance the tourism reception environment, with active engagement from the food service and accommodation associations. This collaborative effort seeks to ensure that visitors encounter seamless and positive experiences throughout their stay in Chungnam.
Furthermore, the meeting delved into strategies for the effective collaboration between the public and private sectors in operating the "2025-2026 Chungnam Tourism Supporters" program. Discussions also explored promotion and marketing strategies designed to cultivate a dynamic and sustainable tourism ecosystem driven by the private sector.
A representative from the provincial government underscored the critical importance of seamless collaboration between the public and private sectors for the resounding success of the Visit Chungnam Year. "We must work together organically to widely showcase the unique allure of Chungnam and dedicate all our resources to ensuring that tourists enjoy convenient and fulfilling journeys," the official stated.
The official further highlighted the diverse array of upcoming festivals that showcase the distinct character of the region, commencing with the Nonsan Strawberry Festival in March and the Asan Yi Sun-sin Festival in April. The calendar includes the Gongju Seokjangni Paleolithic Festival in May and the Hansan Mosi (Ramie Fabric) Cultural Festival in June.
Looking ahead, Chungnam Province is strategically partnering with the Korea Tourism Organization to participate in nationwide initiatives such as the Korea Accommodation Sale Festa and the Employee Vacation Support Project, commencing next month. These collaborations will enable the province to offer attractive discount coupons for lodging facilities within Chungnam, providing tangible benefits to tourists choosing to visit the region.
The "2025-2026 Visit Chungnam Year" represents a concerted effort to not only achieve the ambitious target of 50 million visitors by 2026 but also to cultivate a resilient and thriving tourism ecosystem that generates sustainable economic benefits for the local communities. The active involvement of the tourism industry and the residents of Chungnam is considered paramount to the success of this significant undertaking.
