The groundbreaking ceremony for Cheonan Station, which has been operating as a temporary station since 2003, will be held after 22 years.
Cheonan City announced on the 2nd that it will hold the groundbreaking ceremony for the Cheonan Station expansion and renovation project on the 22nd of this month at 1:30 PM at the Cheonan Station East Plaza.
The city had planned to hold the groundbreaking ceremony in April after the Korea National Railway Authority signed a contract with the construction consortium, Yoochang ENC, for the Cheonan Station expansion and renovation project on April 25. However, due to concerns about violating the Public Official Election Act, as the presidential election was confirmed for June 3, the schedule was adjusted.
The city intends to officially announce the start of the Cheonan Station expansion and renovation project to its citizens through this groundbreaking ceremony. Approximately 500 citizens and officials are expected to attend.
The project involves a total investment of 112.1 billion won to construct a consolidated station with a total floor area of 14,263㎡. This includes renovating the existing 4,440㎡ and expanding by 9,823㎡, equipping the station with passenger, station management, support, and transfer facilities, along with convenience facilities for citizens.
The construction period is approximately 37 months, with completion targeted for May 2028.
Cheonan Station has been operating as a temporary station for over 20 years since 2003, following the collapse of a private investment station project.
The city expects that the Cheonan Station expansion and renovation project will allow Cheonan Station to serve as a key infrastructure hub in the central region, adapting to future railway environment changes, including the Seoul Metropolitan Area Express (GTX-C).
Cheonan City plans to continuously provide information related to the construction schedule, such as improvements to traffic and pedestrian environments around the station.
Kim Seok-pil, Acting Mayor of Cheonan City, stated, "This groundbreaking ceremony is not just the start of construction; it's the culmination of 22 years of citizens' aspirations and a signal for the revival of Cheonan's old downtown. Cheonan Station will be reborn as a regional growth hub where transportation, culture, and commerce converge."
