Gyeonggi Province has announced a significant investment of 5.2 billion KRW (approximately $3.9 million USD) to enhance the coastal road network on Jebudo Island in Hwaseong City. The initiative aims to improve safety for pedestrians and revitalize the island's marine tourism, particularly around the Jebudo Marina.
The project will focus on widening the approximately 1-kilometer stretch of coastal road connecting the entrance of Jebudo Island, passing through the Jebudo Marina, and leading to Jebudo Port. A key component of the expansion includes the construction of dedicated pedestrian walkways to address existing safety concerns arising from the narrow road shared by vehicles and pedestrians.
Jebudo Island is a popular tourist destination in Gyeonggi Province, attracting over two million visitors annually. However, the narrow coastal road, especially the section traversing the Jebudo Marina, has posed safety risks for pedestrians. Recognizing this issue, the province persistently advocated for national funding from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to address the inadequate infrastructure and ensure safer access for both tourists and residents. These efforts have been successful, securing 5.2 billion KRW in funding through a project supporting island development, paving the way for the road expansion.
Gyeonggi Province anticipates the completion of the road expansion project by next year. Officials expect the improved infrastructure to significantly enhance the safety and convenience of transportation for visitors and residents alike, ultimately contributing to the invigoration of the local tourism industry.
Park Jong-min, Director-General of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Life Science Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "The development of the Jebudo Marina coastal road will resolve the inconvenience and safety issues faced by residents and tourists. We will continue to implement support projects to improve the living conditions on the island and specialize its marine tourism resources."
In addition to the road expansion, Gyeonggi Province is also undertaking a separate project to create a 10,000 square meter (approximately 2.5 acres) park on Jebudo Island, with a total investment of 7.6 billion KRW (approximately $5.7 million USD). This planned park will feature rest areas, convenient facilities, and landscaped woodlands, offering visitors a scenic space to appreciate the beauty of the West Sea. The park's design was selected through a competition last year, and the detailed design is currently underway. Construction is scheduled to commence this year, with completion also targeted for next year.
These dual investments in infrastructure and recreational facilities underscore Gyeonggi Province's commitment to enhancing Jebudo Island's appeal as a premier marine tourism destination while prioritizing the safety and well-being of its visitors and residents. The improved road network and the new park are expected to create a more enjoyable and accessible environment, further solidifying Jebudo Island's position as a key attraction in the region.
