Turin, Italy – The 12th Special Olympics World Winter Games have officially commenced in Turin, Italy, marking a momentous occasion as the nation hosts the event for the first time. From March 9th to 15th, over 3,000 athletes from more than 100 countries will compete in a celebration of skill, resilience, and unity.

Among the participating nations, Greece has sent a delegation of 10 athletes, showcasing their talents in four diverse sports: Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Dance Sport, and Snowshoeing. Other venues across Turin and the Piedmont region, many of which were utilized during the 2006 Winter Olympics, are hosting the various events. The Palasport Tazzoli is the stage for figure skating and short-track speed skating, while the slopes of Bardonecchia are where snowboarders demonstrate their skills. Sestriere provides the challenging terrain for alpine skiing events.

The symbolic Flame of Hope, representing the spirit of the Special Olympics, was kindled in Athens on February 25th. This powerful symbol of resilience and determination embarked on a journey that included a special visit to the Vatican for a papal blessing, before arriving in Turin to ignite the Games. The flame’s journey highlighted the global support and recognition the Special Olympics receives.
