Wimbledon defending champion Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic) narrowly advanced to the second round of the 2025 Wimbledon women's singles after a comeback victory against Filipino prospect Alexandra Eala in the first round. With this, Eala's challenge for her first Grand Slam main draw win, which would have marked a new chapter in Philippine tennis history, has been postponed to another occasion.

The match took place on Tuesday, July 1, on Wimbledon's Centre Court. Born in 2005, Alexandra Eala, at just 20 years old, is a rising star in Philippine tennis. Debuting professionally in 2020, Eala first made a name for herself by becoming the first Filipino player to win a Grand Slam junior title at the 2022 US Open Junior Girls' Singles. At the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, she secured bronze medals in both women's singles and mixed doubles, bringing the Philippines its first Asian Games medal in women's tennis in 57 years since 1966. Notably, at this year's WTA 1000 Miami Open in March, she created a sensation by reaching the semifinals as a wildcard, defeating formidable Grand Slam champions like Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, and then-world No. 2 Iga Swiatek, climbing to a live ranking of 74th. More recently, she regrettably shed tears after losing in the Eastbourne final despite holding four match points.

Her opponent, Krejcikova, is the 2024 Wimbledon women's singles champion, having defeated Jasmine Paolini 2-1 (6-2, 2-6, 6-4) in last year's final to lift her first Wimbledon singles trophy. She is a veteran player with a 2021 French Open title, an Olympic mixed doubles gold medal, and numerous Grand Slam doubles titles. Concerns had been raised about Krejcikova's title defense after news broke of her withdrawal from the Eastbourne quarterfinals due to a thigh injury.

The Match Unfolds 

Contrary to expectations, the match showed signs of an upset. In the first set, Eala dominated, showcasing sharp backhand down-the-line shots and consistent serves. Krejcikova, on the other hand, appeared unsettled, committing 19 unforced errors in the first set alone. Eala capitalized on her superior groundstroke ability, effortlessly taking the first set 6-3. Had this momentum continued, it could have led to a colossal upset: the defending champion exiting in the first round.

However, Krejcikova displayed a completely different performance from the second set onwards. Focusing on reducing errors against Eala's aggressive play, she significantly lowered her unforced errors compared to the first set and aggressively targeted Eala's perceived weakness, her serve, taking an early 5-0 lead. She ultimately closed out the second set 6-2, leveling the match.

Krejcikova's Experience Shines 

In the decisive third set, Krejcikova's experience shone through. She began to control the match perfectly with powerful returns. As a Grand Slam doubles champion, she also exhibited a high success rate at the net, converting 8 out of 13 attempts into points. Eala, conversely, failed to overcome her serving weaknesses and had a poor net play success rate, converting only 2 out of 9 attempts into points.

Ultimately, despite struggling with Eala's backhand cross-court shots in the first set, Krejcikova's strong mentality in the latter half and well-timed, clean backhands led her to a comeback victory of 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, successfully advancing to the Wimbledon second round. Although Eala regrettably lost, the match will be remembered as one where she fought valiantly against the defending champion, once again proving her potential.
