Helsinki's 2024 Cultural Act Award Goes to Heidi Hänninen for KAS! Kontula Art School

Helsinki, Finland – Heidi Hänninen, founder of KAS! Kontula Art School, has been awarded the City of Helsinki's 2024 Cultural Act Award, it was announced on Friday. The award, which carries a prize of EUR 5,000, recognizes Hänninen's significant contributions to the Kontula community through her innovative art education program.
The Cultural Act Award, established in 2009, honors individuals or organizations that have made a significant impact on Helsinki's cultural life. This year, Helsinki residents were invited to nominate deserving candidates, resulting in 291 nominations for a total of 70 different acts.
KAS! Kontula Art School offers free, low-threshold street art activities for young people and adults in the Kontula neighborhood. Through the program, participants have created vibrant murals and street art that have transformed public spaces, enhancing the area's visual appeal and fostering a stronger sense of community identity.
The Culture and Library Sub-Committee, responsible for selecting the award recipient, praised KAS! Kontula Art School for its "model of how a grassroots project can change entire neighborhoods in a positive direction." The committee highlighted how the program has not only improved the aesthetics of the area but also contributed to increased feelings of safety and belonging among residents.
Hänninen's inclusive approach to art education was also commended. KAS! Kontula Art School welcomes individuals from all backgrounds, including those facing challenges such as substance abuse or mental health issues, providing a supportive and inclusive environment for artistic expression.
