Bucheon City is fully supporting the operation of 'Moda Class,' a weekend learning program designed to ensure the right to education and emotional growth of children from multicultural backgrounds within the city. The program is garnering attention for providing diverse support through organic collaboration with private organizations, helping these children stably settle into the local community.
'Moda Class' is a flagship learning program for children from multicultural backgrounds, run by the Bucheon Education and Culture Foundation (Chairman Kwon Hyuk-seop), embodying the meanings of "diversity for all" and "everyone together." It currently operates every Saturday and Sunday at the Gangnam Senior Citizens' Center in Dodang-dong, serving 16 children from multicultural backgrounds. Beyond mere academic learning, the program offers integrated educational activities including foundational learning in Korean and mathematics tailored to individual levels, creative character-building community play, and ecological studies, all aimed at fostering the holistic growth of the children.
Bucheon City is focusing on connecting various resources to ensure the substantial operation of 'Moda Class.' As part of this effort, in cooperation with 'Happy Together Food Bank,' operated by Happiness Sharing People, Inc., snacks such as bread and beverages are consistently provided to participating children. This not only contributes to creating an environment where children can concentrate on their studies but also plays a crucial role in alleviating concerns about food insecurity and supporting healthy growth and development.
Furthermore, the city is actively supporting ecological learning and seasonal experience activities. By providing 360 spring and summer flower seedlings from Yeowol Nursery on two occasions, the city has helped children gain valuable experience in planting and nurturing plants directly. Such experiential activities positively influence children's emotional development and provide opportunities to realize the preciousness of life through interaction with nature. In reality, children from multicultural backgrounds often face difficulties in forming peer relationships or adapting to school due to their unfamiliarity with Korean culture and language. For these children, such experiential learning significantly helps them naturally socialize and build rapport with peers.
This support was overseen by the Foreigner Support Team of the Women and Multicultural Affairs Division of Bucheon City. Bucheon City plans to continue strengthening its connections with private organizations, educational institutions, and local resources to provide diverse support, ensuring children from multicultural backgrounds can grow up healthy and happy within the community. In particular, the number of children from multicultural backgrounds is increasing annually, and integrated support in the initial stages is essential for them to establish themselves as members of Korean society. Bucheon City's efforts are expected to become a leading model for social integration, beyond merely ensuring the right to education for these children.
Hwang In-soon, Director of Bucheon City's Women and Multicultural Affairs Division, emphasized, "Children from multicultural backgrounds also deserve equal learning opportunities within the community." She added, "We will consistently strive to provide both academic and emotional support through customized education utilizing weekends and community connections." Bucheon City's support for 'Moda Class' will be an important stepping stone, helping children from multicultural backgrounds fully realize their potential in Korean society and plan for a healthy future.
