SEJONG — Sejong Special Self-Governing City is set to host its flagship cultural event, the 22nd King’s Water Festival, on November 7 at the Jeonui Sports Park.
Organized to celebrate Jeonui Chosoo—a legendary mineral spring historically credited with curing King Sejong the Great’s eye ailment—the festival has been a local tradition since 2003. The event highlights the area's rich historical narrative and unique cultural assets.
The festivities officially commenced on November 2 with a traditional water-blessing ritual (Susinje) performed by local residents at the Gwanjeong-ri spring site.
A Blend of History, Culture, and Community
The main celebration on November 7 is jointly organized by the Jeonui Local Culture Promotion Committee, the Jeonui-myeon Athletic Association, and the Residents' Association.
The day's events will open with a symbolic King’s Water Transport Walking Contest, where participants carry water freshly drawn from Jeonui Chosoo directly to the main venue.
Attendees can experience a dynamic lineup of programs, including:
The King’s Water Theme Pavilion: An exhibition exploring the history and healing lore of the spring.
Interactive Programs: Engaging activities such as the "King’s Water Game."
Cultural Performances: A grand opening celebration featuring a traditional royal military band (Chwitadae).
Fostering Community Harmony
Beginning at 1:00 PM, the community segment of the festival will unfold with the Jeonui-myeon Residents' Harmony Sports Festival and a showcase of local community center programs. Spectators can enjoy energetic performances like line dancing and Nanta percussion, followed by an eight-event recreational sports tournament designed for all ages to enjoy together.
"This year’s festival goes beyond recreation by offering programs that deeply reflect the history and significance of the King’s Water, alongside traditional wrestling matches," said Kim Nam-gil, Head of Jeonui-myeon. "We look forward to welcoming both residents and visitors to a vibrant celebration of unity and communication."
