As finishing touches were underway ahead of its official grand opening on Monday, young Singaporean travelers stepped into the Haeundae Crystal Beach Cherry Garden Chicken Restaurant and Souvenir Shop. "We were so thrilled to find halal Korean food in Haeundae that we practically rushed right in," they said, making a playful gesture as they added, "We were in despair when we searched the internet and couldn't find any halal Korean food in Busan."
They ate the kimchi biryani and dakgomtang (chicken soup) that I made for them. Even when food is halal, people from Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Central Asia, Europe, and Central and South America all have different culinary preferences. Because even their tolerance for spice varies, I adjust the dishes and sauces based on the travelers' nationalities and religions.
We chatted about various things related to Singapore. They earnestly asked me why I became interested in halal food. I told them, "Twenty-six years ago, in your country, my eyes were opened to halal, and I realized how special that market is." They told me, "Cherry, we will spread the word overseas so that your restaurant becomes a new landmark in Busan." I can only feel grateful for the many wonderful connections I encounter wherever I go.
