BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Canadian energy development company Aisa Group is pursuing a project to construct a massive 1-gigawatt (GW) solar power plant in Jáchal, San Juan Province, Argentina, foreshadowing a significant impact on the South American renewable energy market. This project, expected to cost approximately $600 million (around 820 billion Korean Won), will supply power to local industrial parks and contribute to Argentina's national power grid.

Project Driven by Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI) 

Aisa Group proposed this project leveraging the Argentine government's Large Investment Incentive Regime (Régimen de Incentivo a las Grandes Inversiones, RIGI). RIGI is an exceptional program that offers comprehensive benefits, including tax, customs, and exchange rate advantages, for 30 years to investment projects exceeding $200 million (approximately 270 billion Korean Won) in strategically important industrial sectors. Aisa Group plans to secure a stable business environment and undertake this large-scale investment through this regime.

The core of this project is its total generation capacity of 1,000 MW. This is more than double the size of Argentina's current largest solar power plant, the Cauchari project (300 MW, expanding to 500 MW), and is expected to completely transform Argentina's renewable energy landscape upon completion. The electricity generated will be supplied directly to specific industrial customers and connected to the National Interconnected System, which supplies energy across Argentina, greatly contributing to national power stabilization.

Phased Development Strategy: From Mine Operation to National Grid Integration 

Aisa Group plans to implement this solar power plant project in phases. In the initial stage, a 50 MW solar power facility will be installed at the Gualcamayo mine site to self-sufficiently meet the mine's power needs. This is expected to serve as a model for mining companies, contributing to energy cost savings and a transition to eco-friendly energy.

Subsequently, Aisa Group plans to significantly expand generation capacity and construct a 500 kV ultra-high voltage transmission line to strengthen its connection with the national power grid. This will enable efficient supply of large quantities of generated renewable energy across the country. This phased approach is considered a strategy to diversify project risks and enhance the efficiency of initial investments.

Part of Aisa Group's Expansion in the Argentine Energy Market 

This San Juan solar power plant project is part of Aisa Group's strategy to expand its presence in the Argentine energy market. In addition to San Juan, Aisa Group is actively developing other renewable energy initiatives within Argentina. Notably, in San Luis Province, it is undertaking the first phase of a 22 MW solar project, with plans to expand to 51 MW in the future. This demonstrates Aisa Group's strong commitment to utilizing Argentina's abundant solar resources to provide sustainable energy solutions.

Argentina is one of the countries with the highest solar irradiance in the world, possessing enormous potential for solar power generation. Specifically, San Juan Province in the northern region, with its high-altitude desert climate, offers ample sunshine, making it an optimal location for constructing large-scale solar power plants. Furthermore, the Argentine government is demonstrating a strong policy commitment to increasing the share of renewable energy in its energy mix, making it an attractive market for foreign investors like Aisa Group.

Government Approval Process and Future Outlook 

Aisa Group's proposal, submitted to RIGI, is currently being evaluated by the Argentine Ministry of Economy. The Ministry of Economy must make a final decision within 45 business days of receipt. If approved, Aisa Group can begin construction of the power plant under the conditions set by RIGI.

If this project is successfully implemented, it will be a significant milestone in the renewable energy transition for Argentina and the entire South American continent. Large-scale solar power plants not only reduce reliance on fossil fuels and cut carbon emissions, contributing to climate change mitigation, but are also expected to have a positive impact on local economic revitalization and job creation.
