Invited to the Jeongseon Yupyeong Samgut Cultural Recreation Event, Creating an Opportunity to Understand and Harmonize Regional Intangible Cultural Heritage

 

On August 28, the Bucheon Cultural Center (Director Kwon Soon-ho) was invited to the "Jeongseon Yupyeong Samgut (Hemp Steaming) Cultural Recreation Event" held in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon State, marking a meaningful time for urban-rural coexistence and inter-regional cultural cooperation. Forty-one executives and members of the Bucheon Cultural Center participated in the event, observing and experiencing the recreation process of Samgut alongside Jeongseon residents. Participants came to understand the folk culture and community spirit embedded in traditional hemp production, and verified the value and necessity of preserving the intangible heritage passed down in Jeongseon.

Shim Jae-bok, Director of the Jeongseon Cultural Center, stated, "The Bucheon Cultural Center is an institution with a high level of interest and understanding in regional history and culture, having been recognized for its capacity in regional cultural development by winning the Presidential Award at the 2024 Korea Cultural Center Awards. We invited the executives and members of the Bucheon Cultural Center to explore ways to expand and utilize Jeongseon's cultural heritage in various ways." Choi Seung-jun, Mayor of Jeongseon-gun, who visited the event venue, welcomed the visiting delegation from the Bucheon Cultural Center and expressed his hope that this meeting would serve as a meaningful bridge connecting the two regions. Bae Wang-seop, Chairman of the Jeongseon-gun Council, also expressed gratitude for the visit and stated his expectation for continued cooperation that leverages the cultural strengths of both regions.

This event served as an opportunity for Jeongseon residents and Bucheon Cultural Center members to naturally understand regional history and traditions by participating together in the Samgut recreation process. The delegation then toured Jeongseon’s major historical, cultural, and tourism resources, exploring the region's unique charm and cultural value. Combining traditional culture experiences and field trips, this itinerary not only strengthened the bond between the two regions, but also served as an occasion to confirm the potential for exchanges that can lead to cultural tourism and regional economic revitalization.

Kwon Soon-ho, Director of the Bucheon Cultural Center, remarked, "While spending time with the residents of Jeongseon, I once again felt that traditional culture is a precious asset that connects the community. I would like to express my gratitude to Jeongseon-gun Mayor Choi Seung-jun, Jeongseon-gun Council Chairman Bae Wang-seop, Jeongseon Cultural Center Director Shim Jae-bok, and all the residents of Jeongseon who welcomed us so warmly." He added, "Starting with this visit, we will strive to ensure that Bucheon and Jeongseon share their respective regional historical and cultural resources and create new cultural contents and cooperative projects together."
