TONGYEONG, SOUTH KOREA — The 2025 Tongyeong World Triathlon Cup, an official international competition sanctioned by World Triathlon, has been completely canceled after a participant tragically died during a pre-race swimming test. The event, which was set to host over 120 elite international athletes and approximately 1,300 local amateur triathletes in a grueling two-day schedule of swimming, cycling, and running, came to an abrupt halt.

The fatal incident took place on the afternoon of November 15 in the waters off Triathlon Plaza in Donam-dong, Tongyeong. The deceased, a male participant in his 40s, was taking part in a mandatory swimming assessment for amateur division athletes, a prerequisite for competing in the main race scheduled for the following day. At around 2:38 p.m., the individual was observed exhibiting signs of distress while in the water. Event organizers and rescue teams acted quickly, retrieving him from the sea and administering emergency aid before transporting him by private ambulance to a local hospital. He was unfortunately pronounced dead upon arrival.

The Korea Triathlon Union (KTU), the organizing body, swiftly issued a public notice announcing the full cancellation of the World Cup. The Union conveyed its deepest condolences regarding the loss of a valuable life during the beginner's swimming test. "We express deep condolences over the tragic loss of life... and offer sincere condolences to the bereaved family," the KTU stated. The organization emphasized its immediate efforts to secure participant safety and confirmed the regrettable but necessary cancellation of the entire competition schedule.
