DODOMA, Tanzania – In a significant move aimed at tackling poverty and boosting economic self-reliance, the Kongwa District Council in Tanzania's Dodoma Region has commenced the establishment of comprehensive economic empowerment platforms tailored specifically for women. This ambitious initiative, announced recently by District Community Development Officer Faraja Kasuwi, is set to be rolled out across all 22 wards and 87 villages, marking a new chapter in the region’s development strategy.

The platforms are designed to serve as vibrant hubs where women can converge to discuss and actively participate in a wide array of economic and social sectors. The scope of the project is remarkably broad, encompassing traditional areas like business, agriculture, livestock, and fisheries, while also extending into modern and emerging fields such as technology, arts, and climate change adaptation. This multi-sectoral approach reflects a holistic vision for empowering women, enabling them to gain a foothold in diverse industries and contribute more meaningfully to their communities.

According to Kasuwi, the primary purpose of these platforms is to create a structured and supportive environment where women are not just passive recipients of aid but active agents of change. "The purpose of these platforms is to provide women with a space to discuss and engage in various areas," she stated during a meeting in Sagara Ward, one of the first locations to benefit from the program. "Each platform will have specific responsibilities to remain active and seize opportunities in their localities." This focus on localized, self-driven development is a key pillar of the initiative's success.

A cornerstone of the program is its seamless integration with existing local government structures. The platforms will be directly linked to village and ward governments, which will be responsible for overseeing operations, organizing capacity-building meetings, and submitting regular reports to the district council. Furthermore, the district council is committed to providing tangible financial support to these groups. The platforms will be connected to the council’s dedicated 10 percent loan fund, providing women with much-needed capital to launch or expand their ventures. Ward community development officers will play a crucial role as facilitators, connecting the platforms with agricultural extension officers and other experts who can offer guidance on business activities, improve productivity, and facilitate access to broader markets.

The rollout of the platforms began last week, with the initial phase covering the wards of Iduo, Chamkoroma, and Sagara. Once the district-wide implementation is complete, a comprehensive report will be compiled and submitted to the regional level, potentially serving as a blueprint for similar initiatives in other parts of the country.
