La Paz, Bolivia – Bolivian Lithium Deposits (YLB) and the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven) of Belgium have formalized a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on sustainable technologies for the development and production of evaporitic resources in Bolivia. The formal delivery of the MOU took place at the European Union building in La Paz, with members of the diplomatic corps in attendance.

This partnership marks a significant step towards enhancing Bolivia's capabilities in the lithium sector, focusing on environmentally responsible practices. Alfonso Pérez, representing YLB, emphasized the agreement's role in reinforcing the commitment to scientific and technological advancement. Lieven Machiels, KU Leuven's coordinator for Latin America, highlighted that the MOU aims to bolster YLB's expertise in advanced techniques, brine analysis, and characterization.

Key areas of cooperation include:

Enhanced Lithium Production: The partnership will support all stages of lithium production, from brine extraction to the creation of lithium carbonate and hydroxide. The goal is to improve production efficiency and increase lithium recovery while exploring the extraction of other valuable by-products like magnesium, rubidium, and boron.
Sustainable Practices: A strong emphasis will be placed on minimizing environmental impact through reduced waste generation and efficient water usage. KU Leuven will share its expertise in sustainable extraction and processing methods.
Battery Recycling: Recognizing the growing importance of battery recycling, the collaboration will extend to this crucial area. KU Leuven will work with YLB's cathodes and batteries department to develop and implement advanced recycling technologies.
Capacity Building: KU Leuven will provide training and knowledge transfer to YLB personnel, enhancing their skills in advanced techniques and technologies.
Bolivia holds one of the world's largest lithium reserves, and this partnership with KU Leuven underscores the nation's commitment to developing its resources sustainably and responsibly.
