SINGAPORE — Artificial intelligence is sweeping across Southeast Asia at a historic pace, fundamentally reshaping how businesses operate and how consumers interact with the digital economy. However, a closer look at the region’s AI landscape reveals a striking paradox: while adoption is soaring among the masses, direct monetization looks vastly different from Western markets.
According to the latest annual e-Conomy SEA report—released by Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company—generative AI adoption in the region has surged to approximately 243 million people in less than three years. This represents an astonishing 58% of the working-age population, with adoption moving four times faster than the initial uptake of the mobile internet.
Despite these massive user numbers, only 1% to 2% of the region's population currently pays for personal AI subscriptions. This wide gap between heavy usage and direct consumer spending might worry traditional software executives, but industry experts say it misses the bigger picture.
The Real Money: B2B Integration and Indirect Monetization
Speaking in an interview with CNBC, Florian Hoppe, a partner at Bain & Company, emphasized that commercial success in the region does not rely on consumer subscriptions.
"AI monetization does not depend on us paying," Hoppe noted, highlighting that businesses are unlocking immense financial value through backend integration rather than front-end paywalls.
Companies across Southeast Asia are deploying AI to optimize e-commerce conversion rates, streamline customer service operations, and enhance digital advertising. Rather than paying for standalone AI apps, consumers are indirectly funding the technology through everyday purchases developed, marketed, or delivered using AI-driven systems.
This growth occurs against the backdrop of a booming digital economy. Southeast Asia’s digital economy is projected to grow 17% to reach $368 billion in gross merchandise value this year alone, with the overall market expected to skyrocket past $1 trillion by 2035.
Pragmatic Optimism and Consumer Trust
What drives this unyielding regional enthusiasm? Hoppe points to a cultural trait he calls "pragmatic optimism." Southeast Asian consumers have historically ranked among the most active per-capita users of major digital platforms worldwide, demonstrating a high degree of experimentation and openness to novel tools and services. While Singapore stands out as an early regional leader in AI adoption, the enthusiasm is widespread.
This openness translates into growing trust and a willingness to embrace autonomous technologies. The report reveals that:
75% of users are comfortable letting AI agents find the best prices and complete purchases on their behalf.
62% of respondents report higher trust in AI tools compared to a year ago.
Even though per-capita usage in Southeast Asia still lags behind the United States—sitting at roughly 10% of U.S. levels—the regional trajectory indicates rapid convergence driven by practical utility.
Tangible Business Returns Across Key Sectors
For enterprises, the return on investment (ROI) is no longer theoretical; it is showing up clearly on corporate balance sheets.
E-Commerce: About 69% of shoppers now use AI to compare complex purchases such as electronics. Early corporate case studies show AI helping businesses boost conversion rates by 10% year-on-year and increase average order values by up to 75%. A prime example is Shopee, a dominant Southeast Asian e-commerce platform, which now utilizes AI chatbots to handle roughly 80% of customer inquiries, successfully reducing its cost per customer contact by 30% year-on-year.
Digital Advertising and Online Media: Advertisers are seeing a significant uplift in click-through rates and conversions through AI-powered targeting. Online media revenue—encompassing digital advertising and streaming—is forecasted to jump 22% to $44 billion.
Travel and On-Demand Services: Beyond retail, AI is transforming travel itineraries, voice-assisted ride-hailing, and food delivery bookings. Southeast Asia’s online travel market is projected to expand 10% to $59 billion in gross merchandise value this year, while ride-hailing and food delivery are expected to grow 15% to $40 billion.
The Road Ahead
As Southeast Asia marches toward its trillion-dollar digital economy milestone by 2035, the region serves as a global case study in pragmatic technology adoption. By focusing on operational efficiency, seamless automation, and indirect value creation, businesses in the region are proving that the true gold rush of artificial intelligence lies far beyond the subscription box.
