Italy has experienced its hottest summer since records began in 1950, with the National Research Council (CNR) reporting a nationwide average temperature of 24.3 degrees Celsius. This surpasses the previous record of 23.6 degrees Celsius set in 2003. Both July and August marked unprecedented highs, with August logging an alarming average of 25.6 degrees Celsius—significantly higher than the 2024 record of 24.6 degrees Celsius and 5.2 degrees Celsius above the historical average from 1951 to 1980. 

This extreme weather severely impacted primary industries, particularly striking agricultural hubs in the northwestern plains and the Apennine Mountains regions, which faced intense drought conditions and dwindling water supplies. Major urban centers like Rome, Florence, and Turin also endured prolonged heat alerts as severe temperatures persisted across the peninsula.

The climate crisis extended far beyond Italy, shattering historical weather thresholds across the European continent. The United Kingdom recorded a summer average of 16.5 degrees Celsius, breaking the previous year's mark and standing as its highest since record-keeping began in 1884. Austria also registered its hottest summer on record, with temperatures soaring 2.6 degrees Celsius above normal historical ranges, while Germany logged its second-hottest summer in history at 19.6 degrees Celsius. 

Meteorologists attribute this historic atmospheric anomaly to hot air masses originating from North Africa, which became trapped over Europe. The resulting high-pressure system, flanked by stagnant low-pressure areas, formed a persistent omega-shaped block known as an omega dome. Experts emphasize that human-induced climate change continues to accelerate these extreme weather patterns, turning once-rare heat anomalies into frequent continental crises.
