Tanzania is in deep mourning following the passing of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of the country's first female president, Samia Suluhu Hassan. According to official government announcements made by Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, Ameir Hassan passed away on Monday morning, September 7, 2026, at the age of 76 while receiving treatment for a heart condition at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar. 

The late First Gentleman will be laid to rest in Kizimkazi, his family's ancestral home on the semi-autonomous island archipelago of Zanzibar. His death marks a poignant moment for the East African nation, closing a chapter for a quiet figure who unexpectedly stepped into the history books. 

Hafidh Ameir Hassan entered the national and international spotlight in March 2021. When former President John Magufuli passed away suddenly, then-Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan constitutionally succeeded him to become Tanzania's first female head of state. This historic transition automatically made Ameir Hassan the nation's first-ever "First Gentleman," breaking decades of tradition where the presidential spouse title of First Lady was exclusively held by women. 

Before his wife's ascent to the highest office and her broader entry into central national politics, Ameir Hassan built a quiet career as an agricultural academic and retired agricultural officer. The couple married in 1978, sharing a decades-long partnership that predated President Samia's extensive political trajectory. Throughout her tenure as vice president and subsequently as president, Ameir Hassan famously maintained a low public profile, deliberately choosing to stay out of the political limelight and rarely appearing at official public ceremonies. 

The couple shared four children—three sons and a daughter. Among them, their daughter Wanu Hafidh Ameir has actively followed a path in public service, currently serving as an elected member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives. President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who secured her second term following an election victory, is now leading the nation through this period of personal and national grief. 

Following the announcement of his passing, an outpouring of condolences came from leaders across East Africa and the continent. Kenyan President William Ruto took to social media to share his deep sorrow, conveying sympathies on behalf of the Kenyan government and people while praising Ameir Hassan as a dedicated family patriarch and an exceptional son of Tanzania. Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema and Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye also issued heartfelt messages, expressing solidarity with President Samia and the Tanzanian citizens during this challenging time.
