Gyeongju, South Korea – Peru has made significant strides in its pursuit of clean energy and economic formalization, securing crucial support at the first APEC Senior Officials' Meeting in Gyeongju, South Korea. The Peruvian delegation, under the leadership of Ambassador Renato Reyes, Peru's APEC Senior Official, garnered commitments from key regional bodies to advance the nation's ambitious policy objectives.
A primary focus of Peru's efforts is the implementation of the "Lima Roadmap," an initiative championed during its 2024 APEC presidency. This roadmap aims to facilitate the transition to a formal and globally integrated economy. Complementing this, Peru is also driving the development of clean and low-carbon hydrogen strategies across the Asia-Pacific region.
Key to Peru's success was the support pledged by the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC). With Peru being a member since 1991, the PECC, through discussions with Interim Secretary General Dr. Kaewkamol Pitakdumrongkit, has agreed to aid in conducting studies that will underpin the Lima Roadmap and the nation's green hydrogen guidelines. This collaboration will provide Peru with valuable expertise and resources.
Further reinforcing Peru's clean energy ambitions, Ambassador Reyes and Dr. Irie Kazutomo, President of the Asia-Pacific Energy Research Centre (APERC), forged an agreement for cooperative implementation of clean energy guidelines. Their collaboration will emphasize:
Standards and Certifications: Establishing robust frameworks to ensure the quality and sustainability of clean hydrogen.
Market Development: Fostering an environment conducive to the growth of the clean hydrogen market.
These collaborative efforts will be integrated into APERC's ongoing work plan, ensuring sustained progress.
This support from PECC and APERC is important for Peru, as they will provide new technology, and knowledge. Also this will help Peru to continue to be a leader in clean energy inside of the APEC comunity.
This movement by Peru is a clear sign of the nations commintment to a sustainable economic future.
