Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on January 5th that it will double the transportation card support from 100,000 won to 200,000 won for elderly drivers aged 70 and above who voluntarily surrender their driver's licenses, starting this year. This measure aims to address the growing concerns over traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers as the city enters a super-aged society and to reduce social costs.
Key Details:
Eligibility: Residents of Seoul aged 70 or older (born before December 31, 1955) who have no prior record of voluntarily surrendering their driver's licenses.
Support: A prepaid transportation card loaded with 200,000 won (first-come, first-served basis for 31,800 people).
Application: Visit the local community center (Dong- 주민센터) with a driver's license.
Application Period: From January 10, 2025.
The city provides a one-stop service for license surrender and transportation card receipt through the 'Simplified Service for Voluntary Surrender of Driver's Licenses by Elderly Drivers.' In addition, Seoul plans to continuously improve systems such as the conditional driver's license and strengthened aptitude tests to prevent traffic accidents involving elderly drivers, in cooperation with the National Rights Commission and the National Police Agency.
Additional Information:
South Korea is rapidly becoming a super-aged society, with a significant increase in the elderly population.
Statistics show that the rate of traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers is increasing.
The transportation card can be used on public transportation such as buses and subways, as well as at convenience stores and other T-money affiliated stores.
Seoul city officials are planning to enhance traffic safety through close cooperation with related organizations.
