The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 30th that it arrested 25 drivers who drove recklessly in the Gangbyeonbuk-ro area late at night on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act and arrested two of them, including Mr. A, who led a reckless gathering.
Mr. A and others are suspected of increasing the risk of traffic accidents and threatening the safety of citizens by driving at 130-200 km per hour on automobile roads with a speed limit of 80 km per hour, such as Gangbyeonbuk-ro and Jayu-ro, from June to July. They engaged in acrobatic driving, including the so-called ‘snife strike’, in which they drove past other vehicles.
According to the police investigation, they used social media such as Instagram to participate in binge racing gatherings. Most of them were students, office workers, and self-employed people in their 20s, and they gathered at a date and location using their own slang. As few as three and as many as nine vehicles came out and drove recklessly. They increased the number of views and subscribers by posting videos of reckless driving dozens of times on their Instagram account.
The police confiscated one vehicle belonging to the main culprit, Mr. A, and revoked the license of the other main culprit, Mr. B, who was arrested. The remaining 23 people being investigated without detention were given 40 penalty points.
