Gyeonggi-do held ‘New Space Era, Climate Satellite Forum’ on the 27th

As Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon announced that he would promote the 'launch of a climate satellite' as one of the key tasks in the second half of his term, the 'New Space Era, Climate Satellite Forum' was held on 27th July to collect opinions from experts and share the status of climate crisis response using satellites. It was held at Dasan Hall of Gyeonggi Provincial Office on Sunday.

Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon said, “In the past, there were ABCs such as AI (artificial intelligence), batteries, and chips as the driving force behind Korea’s growth, but now there are new ABCs such as Aerospace (space), bio, and climate tech.” He added, “Gyeonggi Province “We are already actively working on biotechnology and climate change response, and now we are happy to be able to put our bold vision and policies for aerospace into practice through the satellite launch plan,” he said.

At the same time, Governor Kim emphasized that Gyeonggi-do's satellite plan has made great strides and significance in three aspects: ▲ scientific response to climate change, ▲ Gyeonggi-do leading the satellite industry, a future food industry, and ▲ cooperation between satellite launch entities.

Governor Kim explained, “First, Gyeonggi Province is actively responding to the climate crisis through climate insurance and climate funds, and the launch of a climate satellite is meaningful in that it is the most scientific way to respond to the climate crisis.”

He continued, “Secondly, space is all related to IT, big data, communications, national defense and the defense industry, and Gyeonggi-do, the center of Korea’s industry, has taken an important step to lead Korea’s future economy with this satellite launch plan. “Finally, we will be able to create a great turning point in industrial development by creating a good foundation for cooperating with global satellite launch companies and creating synergy effects,” he added.

About 300 people, including the provincial council, private experts, provincial and city government officials, the Carbon Neutral Support Center, and provincial residents, attended the forum on this day.

Science communicator Orbit began with a lecture titled ‘The Present and Future of Artificial Satellites,’ followed by an expert panel discussion.

The panel discussion was chaired by Jeong Soo-jong, director of Seoul National University's Climate Technology Center, ▲Kim Gyeong-geun, director of the Satellite System Division at the Agency for Defense Development, ▲Lee Sang-gyu, senior researcher at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, ▲Oh Hyun-woong, head of Korea Aerospace University's Industrial-Academic Cooperation Center, ▲Nam Myeong-yong, CEO of Lumir Co., Ltd. ▲Choi Beom-gyu of S.S. The service research team leader of AI's Earth Information Business Division participated as a discussant.

Starting with this forum, Gyeonggi Province plans to specify the ‘climate satellite launch’ project, which is one of the key tasks for the second half of the 8th popular election, and communicate with the Provincial Council.

Gyeonggi-do's climate satellite is intended to comprehensively observe and analyze the climate crisis, including not only monitoring greenhouse gases, but also monitoring changes in cities and forests due to climate change, and predicting and responding to disasters. If the province secures its own satellite image data and provides services, it is expected that it will contribute to promoting effective policies at the right time and revitalizing the space industry.
