ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – The African Union (AU) has announced that Libya will host the fourth Africa-Turkey Partnership Summit in 2026. The announcement was made during the 38th AU Summit held in Addis Ababa this past weekend. This decision marks a significant step for Libya, signaling a renewed confidence in its ability to play a prominent role on the African continent.
The selection of Libya as the host nation is a result of concerted diplomatic efforts by the Libyan delegation at the AU Summit, led by Mohammed Menfi, Head of the Presidential Council. Libya successfully advocated for its bid, emphasizing the importance of hosting the summit as a demonstration of its commitment to reclaiming its active and influential position within Africa. The country aims to rebuild its reputation as a key player in fostering economic and political cooperation, as well as driving sustainable development across the continent.
This upcoming summit represents renewed international recognition of Libya's capabilities and its crucial role in facilitating dialogue and strategic partnerships between Africa and key global actors like Turkey. The AU statement highlighted that hosting the summit underscores Libya's potential to contribute to stronger, more effective partnerships that serve the shared interests of both Africa and Turkey, ultimately working towards the aspirations of the African continent.
The Africa-Turkey Partnership Summit has become a vital platform for strengthening ties between the two regions. Previous summits have yielded significant progress in fostering cooperation across various sectors. The first summit was held in Istanbul in 2008, followed by summits in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, in 2014, and again in Istanbul in 2021. These summits have been instrumental in establishing joint action plans and addressing key issues related to Turkey-Africa relations. Furthermore, ministerial conferences held in Istanbul in 2011 and 2018 have served as crucial follow-up mechanisms, monitoring the progress of agreed-upon initiatives and paving the way for future collaboration.
The 2026 summit in Libya is expected to build upon the momentum of previous engagements and further solidify the strategic partnership between Africa and Turkey. Discussions are anticipated to focus on areas of mutual interest such as trade and investment, infrastructure development, security cooperation, and cultural exchange. The summit will also provide an opportunity for leaders to address pressing global challenges and explore avenues for joint action on issues such as climate change, sustainable development, and peace and security. Analysts suggest that this summit will be particularly important in further defining the evolving relationship between Turkey and the African continent and solidifying Turkey's growing influence in the region. It also offers Libya a significant opportunity to showcase its progress towards stability and development and to reassert its position as a key player in African affairs.
