Elon Musk, the visionary behind Tesla and SpaceX, has made significant strides in the electric vehicle and reusable space launch vehicle markets. However, one area where he has yet to dominate is the generative AI service market, currently led by Sam Altman of OpenAI and Liang Wenfeng of DeepSeek. Now, Musk is determined to change that with the unveiling of Grok3, the latest AI chatbot from his company, xAI.

Grok3: The Most Intelligent AI?

Musk introduced Grok3 on X (formerly Twitter), proclaiming it as "the smartest AI on Earth." He emphasized its superior computing power, claiming it has ten times the processing capability of its predecessor, Grok2. Grok3 is trained on a massive dataset, including legal documents, enabling it to deliver enhanced logical thinking and response capabilities.

According to xAI, Grok3 was trained on the "Colossus" supercomputer, powered by 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, for 200 million hours. Musk asserts that Grok3 outperforms competing models like GPT-4o (OpenAI), Claude 3.5 Sonnet (Anthropic), and V3 (DeepSeek) in math, science, and coding benchmarks. In the 2024 American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), Grok3 achieved a 52% accuracy rate, surpassing DeepSeek V3's 39% and Claude 3.5 Sonnet's 26%. In the science-focused GPQA benchmark, Grok3 scored 75%, while V3 achieved 59%, Claude 3.5 Sonnet 65%, and GPT-4o 50%.

DeepSearch: A New AI Agent

Along with Grok3, Musk introduced DeepSearch, a new AI agent. xAI engineers describe DeepSearch as a tool that assists engineers, researchers, and scientists in coding, and can answer everyday questions for everyone. Musk explained that DeepSearch can complete tasks that typically take 30 minutes to an hour of web research or social media searches in just 10 minutes.

Availability and Future Plans

xAI plans to offer Grok3 to X Premium+ subscribers initially. They are also launching a "SuperGrok" subscription service, providing additional inference and unlimited image generation capabilities. Musk hinted at adding a voice assistant mode to Grok3 soon and revealed plans to integrate Grok AI into SpaceX systems within two years.

Musk's Motivation and the AI Race

Musk's push for Grok is driven by his personal rivalry with Altman, concerns about DeepSeek's challenge to US AI dominance, and his ambition to create a comprehensive AI ecosystem. Musk was a founding member of OpenAI but left due to disagreements over AI ethics and business practices. He later criticized OpenAI for its for-profit approach and founded xAI to compete.

DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, has emerged as a strong contender, demonstrating impressive performance with its R1 model at a fraction of the cost of US competitors. The industry is watching closely as Musk's xAI, with its Grok3 model, aims to solidify its position in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
