SEOUL — North Korea launched a short-range ballistic missile off its eastern coast on Thursday, marking its first ballistic missile test in 42 days. In response, South Korea's presidential National Security Office held an emergency assessment meeting and strongly condemned Pyongyang's continued provocations.

According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), the missile was detected around 5:00 PM local time, launched from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea (Sea of Japan).

"While strengthening our surveillance and vigilance against potential further launches, the military authorities of South Korea, the United States, and Japan are closely sharing intelligence regarding the missile and maintaining a robust combined defense posture," the JCS stated in a release.
Immediately following the detection, Seoul’s National Security Office convened an Emergency Security Situation Assessment Meeting with top defense and intelligence officials. The security presidential council evaluated the potential impact on South Korea's national defense, reaffirmed an immediate response posture, and formally denounced the launch as a clear violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

Escalating Regional Tensions

This test comes 42 days after North Korea's last ballistic missile test on June 25, which was personally supervised by leader Kim Jong-un. That test featured tactical weapons aimed at South Korean territory, including tactical ballistic missiles, extended-range 155mm artillery shells, and upgraded 240mm multiple rocket launchers.

The launch also follows recent naval developments by Pyongyang. On July 3, North Korea tested strategic cruise missiles fired from its newly constructed 5,000-ton destroyer, the Kang Geon.

Trilateral military coordination between Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo remains at heightened alert as intelligence agencies continue to analyze the trajectory and specific parameters of Thursday's missile flight.
