A recent study, "TIC Kids Online Brasil," has revealed a concerning level of smartphone addiction among Brazilian youth. The survey found that a majority of Brazilian children and teenagers between the ages of 9 and 17 access social media multiple times a day.
The study indicates that 24% of respondents reported trying but failing to reduce their internet usage, while 22% admitted to browsing the internet without a specific purpose. Additionally, 22% acknowledged spending less time with family and friends and neglecting their schoolwork due to excessive internet use. This figure rises to 30% among 15 to 17-year-olds.
These findings suggest a severe smartphone addiction problem among Brazilian youth. Excessive smartphone use can lead to various issues, including academic underperformance, interpersonal relationship problems, and depression.
The survey, conducted annually by Brazil's Internet Steering Committee, involved 2,424 internet users aged 9 to 17 this year.
Experts emphasize the need for concerted efforts from families, schools, and society to address this issue. Parents are encouraged to limit their children's screen time and engage in more family activities. Schools should strengthen media literacy education and establish guidelines for smartphone use. Additionally, the government should implement policies to promote a healthy internet environment and support related research.
The smartphone addiction problem among Brazilian youth has emerged as a significant social issue. Addressing this problem requires collaborative efforts from families, schools, and society.
