[GLOBAL ECONOMIC TIMES] Norway has said it is considering installing a fence on its border with Russia. Norwegian Justice Minister Emilie Engermel said in an interview with public broadcaster NRK on the 28th local time that the country is considering various measures, including installing a fence along the 198km border with Russia, to strengthen border security on the Russian side.
The move follows Norway's deepening security concerns following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The Norwegian government has already taken strong measures, including restricting the issuance of visas for Russian tourists following Russia's invasion in February 2022, and denying entry to Russians for non-essential purposes in May of this year.
The Norwegian government explained that this measure was based on the example of Finland, a neighboring country and member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Finland has installed iron fences along some sections of the border since March of last year on the grounds that Russia is intentionally driving out illegal refugees who entered Russia from third countries to Finland, and has virtually completely closed all borders on the Russian side since December of the same year. did it
Minister Mel emphasized that Norway, like Finland, is prepared to quickly close its borders if the security situation worsens further.
Norway's move suggests that border controls between the two countries will be further strengthened amid worsening relations with Russia. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Nordic countries are increasing their vigilance against Russia and working to strengthen their security.
Norway's review of border fence installation comes from this trend, and attention is being paid to what impact it will have on the future security landscape of the Nordic region.
