Brasília – A series of two explosions rocked Brazil's Three Powers Plaza on the night of Wednesday, November 13, sending shockwaves through the nation's political and legal circles. This incident comes just a year and ten months after the January 8, 2023, attack on Brazil's Congress, Supreme Court, and presidential palace by extremist supporters of the former president, Jair Bolsonaro.
A body was found near the Supreme Court building, leading authorities to believe that both explosions were likely carried out by the same individual. Brasília's Fire Department confirmed another explosion at a parked car near an annex of the Chamber of Deputies, also in the vicinity of the judiciary.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene to assess the damage, recover the deceased, and prevent further incidents. Special Operations Police (BOPE) conducted a thorough search of the area, while the Institutional Security Office (GSI) immediately increased security measures at the Planalto Palace.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva left the Planalto Palace and moved to the Alvorada Palace, where he met with Federal Police Director Andrei Rodrigues to discuss the situation. The GSI initiated a safety inspection of the Planalto Palace, and the government pledged a thorough investigation into the incident.
The explosions have sent shockwaves through Brazilian society. Following last year's attack on government buildings, these latest incidents have heightened public anxiety and concerns about national security. Politicians are calling for a thorough investigation into the motives behind the attacks and for enhanced security measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
